Every sign of 30 degrees is split into nine divisions of 3 degrees 20 minutes each. A planet placed in the first navamsa of a sign is counted as beginning from the same sign; the divisions then proceed in the order of the zodiac. For example, planets in the first nine navamsas of Aries are mapped into Aries, Taurus, Gemini, and so on, all within the D9 wheel.

The D9 ascendant itself is read from the navamsa division occupied by the D1 ascendant degree.
